BRITISH PATTERN 1903 BAYONET WITH ORIGINAL SCABBARD EAST SURREY REGIMENT
This pattern 03 bayonet is maker marked to Enfield and has various issue stamps on the ricasso and also the pommel where it is stamped ESR (East Surrey Regiment. This example still has its original scabbard which are hardly ever found complete with the bayonet. The scabbard fittings are painted in a tan colour which may indicate use in India or the Middle East. During WW1 the regiment raised 17 Reserve, Territorial and New Army battalions. These served at home stations, on the Western Front, in Egypt, Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) and India. The cross guard has a small cut in it which may indicate a bullet strike.
Pattern 03 bayonets are becoming rarer and almost impossible to get with a complete scabbard, prices have risen greatly in the past few years and will continue to do so.
