VICTORIAN PERIOD BRITISH COURT SWORD
HISTORY
Victorian period British court swords (c. 1837–1901) are highly ornate, lightweight, dress-wear weapons designed for Royal Household members, diplomats, and senior officials. They feature polished, etched steel blades, often gilt-brass hilt fittings with Queen Victoria’s "VR" monogram, and black leather scabbards. These "small swords" served as ceremonial, rather than functional, accessories. These swords represent the pinnacle of 19th-century British decorative metalwork and are highly sought after by collectors, often featuring 98% or more of their original fire-gilt finish.
