US CIVIL WAR PERIOD ALLEN AND WHEELOCK SINGLE SHOT PERCUSSION CAP PISTOL 1845 PATTERN
HISTORY
- The Manufacturer: Made by Ethan Allen (1808–1871), a prominent 19th-century American gunsmith. Early iterations were produced with his brother-in-law, Charles Thurber (as Allen & Thurber). The "Allen & Wheelock" branding came slightly later in the 1850s when his nephew, Thomas Wheelock, joined the business.
- The Patent: The famous "tube hammer" or "bar hammer" design—where the hammer sits flat against the top of the frame—was patented in April 1845. Pistols bearing this mark date from the late 1840s to the 1860s.
- Action: Typically a smoothbore, single-shot mechanism. Later, this technology was applied to multi-barreled "pepperbox" pistols and revolving pistols.
- Caliber: Most pocket and muff pistols were made in .28 to .32 caliber, though larger single-shot .36 and .44 caliber versions were also produced.
- Barrel: Usually short (2 to 4 inches) to fit easily into a pocket or muff (a small, fur hand-warmer common in the 19th century).
- Historical Market: Because thousands were produced across various iterations, these antiques are staples of Gold Rush and Civil War-era collections.
- Value: The value depends heavily on condition, original finish, and markings. Typical single-shot examples range anywhere from \(\$600\) to \(\$1,500\) USD depending on whether they are cased, engraved, or have fully matching serial numbers.
