WW1 GERMAN ARTILLERY NCO PICKELHAUBE-SAXONY
The German army of WW1 had three Grades of helmets tied to their ranks. the enlisted soldier's pickelhaube is identified by its leather chinstrap. The NCO Pikelhaube had brass officers chinstrap but retained the same liner as the enlisted soldiers. The Officers Pickelhaube Had the brass chinscales and a more plush silk lined liner, most were private purchased.
This example is an early WW1 NCO pickelhaube due to its brass fittings, later in the war it changed to painted steel fittings in Grey to aid the camoflague effect and to cut down the cost. The helmet plate is that of the Prussian state of Saxony. The spike has the artillery ball top which unscrews. The brass chinscales are in good order. The rosettes are still present. Standard liner which is in good order. Small size.
