RARE EARLY GERMAN WATER PROTECTION POLICE SHAKO (German: Wasser Schutz Politzei)
The German Water Protection Police was incorporated nationally into the Third Reich Police Force in 1933, Previously to that each German state assumed responsibility for the water ways in their state. The Shakos are regarded as extremely rare. They differed in apperance to the normal Police Shako as the eagle emblem to the front was in Brass. The early versions used the early pattern leather Shako with a brass vent hole and fittings. Later versions conformed to the standard Third Reich Police Shako.
This example is the first version being made of Black Leather body with brass fittings and the single vent hole and brass Third Reich Eagle to the front. It is maker marked inside but is unreadable. The rear inside skirt is clearly stamped with WSP and dated 1933 (see images). Chinstrap is present as is the cockade maker marked to Assman.
This is the first Water Police Shako that I have come across and would be a shrewd purchase for a Third Reich Shako collector.
