An original MK II 'Helmet, Steel, Airborne Troops' dating from the 1950s.
This pattern of helmet, often referred to as the 'Four Pattern HSAT MK II', was introduced during the Second World War and saw extensive issue with airborne troops well into the post-war period. This example dates from the post-war period as it has blackened brass fixtures to the chin strap. The shell is in good condition and the exterior has been repainted at some stage in a nice khaki green shade. The interior still retains its original paint finish which is a bronze green - typical of post-war items. The chin strap is the four point type which is held on to the helmet with the original screws and hex shaped nuts. The webbing chin strap is in good condition with some oxidation to the metal parts and some brass showing through. The leather chin cup is also present. The top bump pad is missing. the helmet has been personalised on the inside crown painted with "MUSSELL the RUSSEL"
The helmet displays well but has various signs of wear and age. The leather sweatband shows heavy use and age and the foam between this and the shell is shedding a little. There are chips and scuffs to exterior paint finish but overall the helmet looks great when displayed. Please study the pictures before purchasing.
A nice original British Army airborne helmet which would make a nice addition to any collection.
Bit of history
3rd Battalion (3 Para) made the last-ever British full-battalion parachute drop in Suez in 1956. The following year, the Glider Pilot Regiment was disbanded, leaving the Parachute Regiment in a single-regiment corps. During these years the regiment served on Cyprus, in Bahrain and Aden.
When the Australian SAS (Special Air Service) was formed they were issued and used this type of helmet that were purchased from the British Army. Most of the British Paratroopers helmets here in Australia and especially from here in WA (home of the SAS) are ex SAS.
